There are different kinds of
interpreting.
When
interpreting simultaneously the interpreter is sitting in a
soundproofed booth (often out of sight of the audience) and
translates the words of the delegate as he or she is
uttering them. This kind of interpreting is often
considered to be the smoothest and most efficient way.
Sometimes however consecutive interpreting is preferred.
First the delegate takes the floor for a couple of minutes.
In the meanwhile the interpreter is taking notes of what is
being said. Not until the delegates pauses, does the
interpreter start rendering what has just been said. The
interpreter often stands right beside the delegate.
Consecutive and simultaneous interpreting are the standard
ways of interpreting.
Yet, it
is not unthinkable the audience only consist of a number of
people, or that there simple is not enough time or space
for soundproofed booths. A solution to this problem is
whispering, where the listener gets what is being said
simultaneously whispered into his or her ear.
In the future it will become more common for the
interpreter to listen to the delegate and then
simultaneously write down what is being said, some sort of
a live subtitling on the spot.
The possibilities are legion.
Understandable is
competent to be able to adequately adapt to the costumers
needs and wishes.
