Unlike a
translator, an interpreter can, nor should, ever interpret
everything that is being said.
Sometimes this is a matter of clarity. An interpreter works
not only in the service of the delegate, but also services
an audience. It is however vital that the content remains
the same. Yet, hesitations, repetitions and halting are
features of naturally spoken language and can be considered
superfluous both from the perspective of the speaker as
well from the listener. Both sides therefore benefit from a
clear and concise message.
Sometimes this a matter of time. Especially in the case of
simultaneous interpreting time, or the lack of it, can be
stressful. The level of proficiency of the delegate or the
level of technicality of the subject can complicate the
interpreters work.
This is why an interpreter often will stick to his or her
native tongue. Depending on the situation and subject, a
‘retour’ (working into the foreign language) is
possible.
